Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot Lending Program

WPL Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot lending will begin on Monday, November 27, 2017.
Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot Terms of Use
Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspots will provide Internet access to Wi-Fi enabled smartphones, tablets and PCs through the Rogers cellular network. Service will be dependent on the availability of the cellular network where the hotspot is being used.


Borrowing and Use

Eligibility: Customers must be 18 years of age or older  (Photo ID/proof of age may be requested), and be in good standing with the library.

Content and Usage: Use of the device is subject to the Whitby Public Library’s Internet Access Policy, the Wi-Fi Internet Use Policy, and the Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot Terms of Use.

Service Coverage: Service is available anywhere in Canada within the cellular network coverage area. International service is not available.

Circulation: Mobile Hotspots may be checked out for two weeks. Holds may be placed. Renewals are allowed if there is no waiting list. Hotspots must be picked up within 3 days of notification at the branch’s front desk.

Mobile Hotspots must be returned to Borrower Services desk at any WPL location during open hours. Customers will be charged repair/replacement fees for devices returned through the library book drops.

A quick visual inspection of the Hotspot is done at check-in, but you will remain responsible for the device until a more thorough inspection by IT staff is completed. If there is an issue with the returned Hotspot, you will be contacted and charged a repair/replacement fee if the device was returned damaged. Users are responsible for any loss or damages that happen during their lending period. The fee for repairs or replacement is up to $200.


Usage Fee: There are no usage fees and data is unlimited. The connection is 3G or 4G/LTE depending on what is available in your area.

Sessions: The Mobile Hotspot can provide Wi-Fi Internet access for up to 10 devices.

Privacy: Whitby Public Library does not monitor or store any data related to users’ Internet activity


Overdue fees: The overdue fine is $1.00 per day to a maximum of $20.00 until returned. The Mobile Hotspot will be deactivated if the device becomes overdue or lost.
Replacement Cost: If the Hotspot and/or accessories is lost or damaged, replacement cost will be $200.00.
Care of Device: Mobile Hotspots should be kept in a temperature controlled environment; do not leave it in a car.
