Durham Indie Collection

Donations to the Durham Indie collection must:

  • be written by authors who reside in the Regional Municipality of Durham or are members of the Scugog First Nation.
  • meet basic formatting and technical requirements noted below.  
  • not contravene Canadian law. 
  • not contain advertising. 

Authors of books published by traditional publishers and self-published authors who would like us to purchase their works are welcome to submit a recommendation to purchase for evaluation. Purchased books will be added to the regular library collection and not to the Durham Indie collection. 

Physical Book Requirements 

 Binding for Physical Books 

  • We will accept case binding, perfect binding and saddle stitch binding. 
  • We cannot accept comb, spiral or thermal bound books.

Once accepted, physical books become the property of the Whitby Library and as such, cannot be returned to the donor. 

eBook Requirements 

We can add your title to the Whitby Library’s Overdrive eBook service if it is available on Smashwords, Draft 2 Digital or Kobo Writing Life. Titles distributed through Amazon are not available to libraries. Amazon-published authors can make their book available through one of the platforms listed above to be included in our collection.  

We can also upload your eBook directly to Overdrive. 

Your eBook must: 

  • be in EPUB format
  • be no greater than 10 MB in size. 
  • include a full title page with the author’s name / pen name, full title of the book and year of publication. 
  • use standard fonts that are readable and universally compatible across different devices. 
  • include a hyperlinked table of contents to help readers navigate.

About Your Book
